Controlmad mad - Parametric design

Wishlist for next Rhino.

Dear Rhinoceros fans and nerds(I’m one of them, actually)!

McNeel team is doing great job working on new Rhinoceros releases, I have to admit. However, there are still some missing features, which might be included in Rhinoceros. Find some time, try to think which are you personally missing and let me know in the comment area below. After some time, I’ll collect your answers and I’ll send them straight to McNeel team, maybe this could help a bit to push the development forward.

Thanks for the rest of the Rhino community :)

UPDATE: March 9th, 2012

I sent the official email, containing this document to Bob McNeel

Thanks for Your help, dear fans. Keep Your fingers crossed ;)

  1. Very basic option suggestion.
Assign dash line or bold line to selected object, without changing its color. (same as autocad)
So that you still can see the layer of the selected object.
So that you can use all the color for your drawing. (I often get 2d plans with yellow lines for example, they look like they are selected).
So that you can work on the color background you like ( I like white background for perspective view but then you hardly see the yellow selection)
    thanks

  2. wanna have a better gumball functionality, with the possibility of snapping it precisely to places and regulate its size. Also the gumball should work also on faces and edges (move face move edge) That would be real cool!

  3. In Make2D drawing very usefull would be if rhino could export lines into layers that drawed object is in. Means if you have complex obejct consists of more smaller objects rhino can distribute them into designated different layers, colors etc,

also speed of counting those lines is enormously huge in solidworks you can just pull the lines out of drawing instantly
BTW (step files form SW are drawed more more faster then obejct created in rhino itself)

i would appriciatte parameters table of primitive objects at least. So if i want to scale 1D or 2D I can just type in length or width etc

    thanks

  4. FlexEthos says:

The possibility of more that one background Bitmap at a time? And a layer manager to control them..?

  5. - collapsible menu items rather than fixed
    - the ability to smooth geometry based on a keystroke similar to maya (t-splines offers something similar but it’s not integrated nor is it as simple as a keystroke)

  6. -Opening all files in one Rhino session like in Solidworks or Photoshop. It is a pain especially when editing blocks. It takes too long to open a new session, edit the part, save and close again.

-A feature like “Configurations” in Solidworks.

-Extrusing like in TSplines; dragging gumball with a modifier key. Gumball should be able to do much more things.

-CaptureToFile with a desired resolution would be amazing!

    -Gumball 2D Scale

-All toolbar options are available through command line except switching through tabs. This can be obtained by adding “switch” to command menu seen after “-Toolbar Group “; as
“New Delete Show Toggle Switch PopUp”
Thus, we can switch one to other using shortcut macros that we had defined from menu “Options->Keyboard”.

  7. 3DS Max and even Matrix for Rhino offer an interesting function – New project. The meaning of this function is in defining the default path on your HDD before starting working on the project. This folder remains default for the whole project – All renderings, materials, incremental saves are saved to this folder. The advantage of this option will be much better user experience – so we don’t have to run all over the HDD permanently to search for appropriate files used in the project. Also, can you imagine the comfortableness of moving the scene with all materials, saves and renders to the different workstation? Thanks

  8. hi…
    and thanks for rhino
i wish rhino5 can identifiable Persian or Arabic font
when we type a text in rhino ,see separated Persian or Arabic words
thank a lot for follow this wish

  9. I would really love a matte shadow function! And ability to custom defining which object cast shadows! ( VRAY )
Better section functions and being able to render sections without slicing up the model all the time…

    Thanks for doing this Matus!

  10. There are tons of great suggestions here! Is anyone else wondering why we can’t find any of these suggestions on the official Rhino 5 development forum. I can’t figure out why their forum seems so desolate. It makes me think that there are either just a handful of people on Rhino 5, or that Rhino is hugely less successful as a program than I give it credit for. Or, that they don’t actually care much for what their users think, which would surprise me a little since Rhino seems to portray that user input is really important here, http://v5.rhino3d.com/page/development-process

At this writing, there have been only 19 items wishlisted on their forums in the last year. How can that be? For how much I love and use Rhino, that’s a pathetic amount of user input. And it’s not just the lack of user input that confuses me, the ‘developer responses’ seem far and few.

There just seems to be a major disconnect compared to how frequently the WIP/Betas are updated, and how many functionality issues that I personally find that aren’t fixed in the following Beta releases.

Does anyone have any insights on this? Is their ‘user input’ by invitation only or something?

  11. I like if you can extrude a point into a line.
Then you could do extrude point to line, extrude line to surface, extrude surface to volume.

  12. Boatengben says:

I still want to know if gumball can scale 2d and how, if is alredy there

  13. Boatengben says:

Holding shift key whiles drgging to scale in gumball enables 3d scaling.what if holding clt key enables 2d scale.holding clt will move the primitve up but only if outside the small rectangle use to scale in gumball.too much circles, rectangle and other shapes in gumball will cause people to snap to the wrong transilators.

  14. Matus,

I just saw the official email sent to Bob and his team…Thank you for taking this upon yourself on behalf of all of us Rhino users. I know that it’s a difficult, if not impossible thing to try to please all users of a piece of software, but your initiative did a great job in concentrating the ideas and frustration.

    Keep up the great work!

  15. edit mode in blender use the same method in 3dsmax and tsplines to edit solid you can see here http://www.blender.org
and i hope they reduce the price of rhino .
i am in Algeria but no reseller here . i hope they find method to buy rhino in all the world

  16. Need much better reverse modeling……mesh to nurb commad needs much more setting up

  17. Göktürk Topuz says:

Kinect support is the feature that I want. Modelling without mouse & keyboard. I dont want to be chained to a chair a whole day ; 300 days a year just to design a product…

  19. two essential things there is a lack of within rhino native:

    1- CONSTRIANTS (as http://drivingdimensions.com )

2- STACK OF COMMANDS AS THE STACK OF MODIFIERS in 3dmax ; adding parametrics on the fly (not as grasshopper ones)

  20. There is possibility to match properties for objects materials (from one object to another) but not for texture mapping, am I right?

  21. I love the beautifull work done around rhino, nevertheless is missing some functionality to go faster. Inspiration can come from simple interface like sketchup.
    For exemple :
    - “make unique” function : selecting one or many block, we can execute the function to create a new block conserving instantiation between the selected items. really useful when working with thousand of blocks in different position and scale !
    - section tool (as mentioned before)
    - sun positioning…
    etc.
    hope it will inspire programmers.
    good luck

  22. Texture Replicator!!! (Check modo 601)

  23. Cap option on Sweep1 and Sweep2 please for when you’re making things like kerbs and want a solid.

    • Also the option to set two distances or an angle for ChamferEdge, so that you can, for example, cut the corner off a cube at 30 degrees instead of the normal 45 degrees, unless there’s already an easy way to do it that I’ve not found

  24. Isolate selection PLS !!
