Realistic grass in Rhinoceros

Last week I spotted very interesting images in our forum. Maciek uploaded his latest tests in Rhino and V-Ray, where he has tried to achieve a realistic grass in Rhino. In my opinion he was really successful in this, and what’s even better – he agreed to share his grass model with all FlyingArchitecture fans.  First of all, check out this gallery of visualizations prepared by Maciek:

This is how the geometry looks like in the Top view:

It can’t be more simple! Just a diffuse texture and alpha map assigned to it.

This simple realistic grass in Rhino might be used for any render engine, not only for V-Ray. So Fry, Arion, Maxwell, Brazil, Flamingo (and everything else) users, I’m waiting for your rendered images :)

  1. That’s awesome :)
thanks a lot to you both guys!

  2. used this kind of approach in my previous work :-),fast and very easy especially on flat plains, but rather tricky on hilly ground

  3. very good! great renderings!

  4. This is more than awesome oO
    Very good job !!

  5. Thanks alot, this is very useful! But when i multiply the model to the whole scene, rhino crashes. someone help please?

  6. Where we find Rhino 5?

  7. Is it possible to make the whole scene able to download please?

  8. I have a question regarding this. I tried to put the alpha in the displacement and the grass in diffuse, but the grass just didn’t grow vertically. Does anyone hv an ans to this? thx :))

    • So You just described exactly what You have done wrong :) Why did You put Alpha into displacement? Alpha belongs to Transparency. Also, don’t forget to download the grass in 3dm in the first download link, so you get the grass geometry as well :)

  9. I got it :)) thx alot. Im kinda new to rhino :P

  10. This is a good method but for first plans only. Why? Because it almost doubles (not to say “triples”) the rendering time. For the rest of the plans I suggest to use Micha’s enviroment method with Simulacrum.de_GrassEnvironment_endless.png file which was described long ago at ASGVIS (now Chaos Group) forum. Cheers!

  11. Zbieraj: it’s not so bad, i have Phenom X6 3.2Ghz, 4GB DDR and Rhino 4, visualisation 3150×1575 pxl takes me something about 1h, with this grass, ies lights etc.

  12. how do you use the files to make the grass..im abit lost..i have rhino 4 and vray

I’m starting to move backwards now… do you know of any good tutorials or references for getting to where you’ve gotten with these scenese?

  14. Sorry, but you mentioned Rhino 5. Is it really worth the download?

    • Bruno, Rhinoceros 5 64bit is the most awesome thing I’ve ever installed on my PC! :) It’s super fast, stable and what is really important, it can handle huge scene in shorter times :)

  15. Ok, i’ll give it a try!
    Thanx, Matus!

  16. thank you man i use it and learn many thing from that .
like always i am learning from you my teacher ;) :-x

  17. Nice technique :) somehow it remembers me of something ^^

  18. Hi Matus. Great site!
I excuse in advance for my noob questions, but I’m kinda new of this world and I’m trying to learn. I read you are really impressed by Rhinoceros 5.0. I downloaded it, but I didn’t manage to associate Vray with it. What did I wrong?
    Thx in advance! :)

  19. looks very nice :)
    what were the rendertimes?

  20. Hi, really good work.
I’m also interested in the settings and the whole scene.
    How can I contact Maciek?

    Best regards

    C

  21. ok, thanks!

  22. How do i put this to work . I type mass properties but it say unknown also displacement .. Can any one teach so i can be able to view the grass like the picture

  23. can you explain that to me if you dont mind

  24. Hi ! I just tried thıs technique.. the part the does render looks great!:) BUT .. when I lower the perpective of the grass plane( a flat roof ), the closer I get to eye level, the least of the grass renders.

In the calculatıons a black smudge initially appears, whıch ultimately renders ınvisible. I tried swıtching off double faces, altered the bias level, as well as the shadow bias, and changed the render engines/types.. no luck do far :/

    Any help ? :) Thanks !

  25. PS.. Most of the examples displayed above are at low perspective levels.. and they look great! I want that… !! :)

    Thanks again!:)

Hi everyone! I´ve tried to open the 3D model grass, but with no results. Rhino says ” Invalid minor version”. I have installed Rhino 4.0 SR9. Any help please? Thanks.

  28. Hello, I tried rendering this scene and the grass looks great at low perspective. When I render from a higher perspective I get too many open spots is there a way to stop that from happening other than copy/paste 100 times?

    Thanks!

  29. Sorry I’m very new to Rhino-Vray, can someone please give me a simple step by step guide as how to do this? I’ve tried rendering it just becomes a bunch of planes with the pictures on them, with white backgrounds, it looks really wrong…?

Many thanks for the help :)

    I’ll appreciate it greatly

  30. How do we make those textures?

  31. hey can you help me? i tried using this method but i get this annoying outline around the grass. this doesn’t happen with other textures.do you know how to get rid of them?

  32. hey. can you help me? i tried using this method but i get this annoying outline around the grass. this doesn’t happen with other textures.do you know how to get rid of them?

    • Most probably you have to adjust tansparency mask.
For more proper information, start you own Topic in our forum, so we can speak about it also using images ;)

      • Thanks for your help. I fixed it. On the diffuse map everything around the grass should be black.

  33. how do I diffuse texture and alpha map??
