The Eames Lounge Chair and ottoman, correctly titled Eames Lounge (670) and Ottoman (671), were released in 1956 after years of development by designers Charles and Ray Eames for the Herman Miller furniture company. It was the first chair the Eames designed for a high-end market. These furnishings are made of molded plywood and leather. Examples of these furnishings are part of the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Thanks to Jeanloïc Nédélec for sending this model. Visit Jeanloïc’s blog to see his work.

The aesthetic trademark of .03 is its clear simple lines – the quintessence of the concept “less is more”. Only when the user sits down does he experience its great comfort. The soft seat and backrest shell made of integral foam support the body when sitting, together with the leaf springs integrated into the backrest. Thanks to Jan Štefl for sending this model.

Harry Bertoia was a true renaissance man. An artist, sculptor, jewelry maker, and designer, Bertoia worked with Charles and Ray Eames at the Evans Products Company. He is best known for his work with metal — specifically, wire. Designed in 1952, Bertoia’s wire group for Knoll has been in continuous production ever since, made entirely by hand in a wooden wire-bending frame. Thanks to Brian James for sending this model.

Influenced by Marcel Breuer’s use of tubular steel, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe quickly recognized the compatibility of this revolutionary material with the contemporary design ethos. Inspired by the lines of tubular iron rockers designed in Europe during the mid-19th century, Mies incorporated a new material and a new technology in the use of the cantilever principle.
